Purpose Driven Life

Hi Friends,

I should have written to you earlier than this. I kept postponing it because of a single thought that I wasn’t ready. Probably it was just the anxious thought of writing to you.

I have never felt too tired to write. It’s not imposter syndrome. It’s that feeling of not sending a good morning text to your lover when you know it’s been a ritual.

The problem is, you were meant to send the text immediately you remember, but something tells you to wait. Before you realise it, it’s already 3 weeks into January.

Now, the trouble has festered. I hope we can mend this distance soon, friends.

I am back now though and I want to write on a popular topic regarding the essence of existence.

I think you should read this & this before reading today’s letter.

Happy New Year & Welcome to 2024.

Cheers to Living a Seamless Life!

PURPOSE-DRIVEN LIFE

If you’ve read the 2 letters I wrote above, you will understand that purpose is a sense of meaning. We are beings of meaning. We are all constantly seeking meaning.

The only difference is that some are seeking the meaning that has already been defined. While some are creating new maps for the next generation.

When I say “Defined” I mean someone has already figured it out for you. Your job is just to follow the map drawn and given to you.

Go to school – Get a job – Get married – Retire – Vacation – Die

This cycle repeats itself for generations.

Meaning comes as a result of asking questions and seeking the answers to these questions.

Seeking meaning led us to the Moon, we want to understand how it works. It led to the creation of the Atomic Bomb. Oppenheimer sought to understand that fission, which splits the nucleus of an atom into two lighter nuclei, unleashes enormous power, capable of levelling Hiroshima and Nagasaki. But fusion, which combines two light nuclei into one, unleashes far more energy and can level, in a sense, the world.

These are people who created new maps.

The truth is meaning can lead to both good and bad things. I am not one to paint a picture in black or white. I think I love black-and-white pictures though (winks).

One man sought a different form of meaning and this led to inventing the mobile devices and laptops we use. We can take this beyond just invention. Dr. Martin Luther was a man who sought meaning.

Let’s bring it closer. One person in your lineage decided to be the first man to go to the university. He decided to seek a different form of meaning.

Some seek meaning in God. While others seek meaning in their work, career, family, fame and religion. No man or woman lives without some sort of meaning.

As a child, we were guided by our parents and environment; automatically subscribed to a kind of meaning.

It’s also very difficult to wear off the meaning that was imbibed into us as kids. I believe it leaves a mark on us till death.

To live a seamless life here on earth, you can’t move about without an understanding of where you draw meaning from. What you unconsciously walk with as your meaning in life.

You are living by a ‘meaning’ whether you subscribed to it or not.

The purpose of this letter is to help you understand the meaning or purpose you are currently subscribed to.

Your job is to find what you are currently walking with and see if it’s truly what you want or meant to follow. If it’s not, you steer in a different direction.

Don’t expect an immediate change in course. You can’t pull down a stronghold that has been built over the years in just a few weeks. Be patient.

I will continue from here next week. For now, take these action steps.

Action Steps

  1. Sit & Reflect on where you draw meaning from. This might prove difficult at first, but you don’t have to look inside only. Take a look at the results you produce, the way you react to things, take a look at the friends you walk with, and take a look at your parents; most times they are the source. The community (both virtual and physical) you belong to also.
  2. Ask questions to gain clarity. Where am I coming from? Where am I going to? Am I in line with my dreams or something different? If I continue on this path will I actualize my dreams? What can I do to be on the right path? What are the current hindrances to my vision?
  3. Write down the result you get from the 2 actions above.

This Week’s Ponder

Here is something you should brood over for the week.

Warren Buffett on identifying what matters:
Write your obituary and try to figure out how to live up to it.
Imagine yourself being lifeless and think of what will be the most important thing.

I am currently reading 2 books and I might still be reading one going into next month.

What am I Watching?

I hardly have time for movies, yet I still try to see 1 episode a day.

Breaking Bad & House of Cards
