Why the Most Successful People Choose to Be Both
It is crazy how the crazy ones win so often in life.
Think about the comedians, the actors, the writers, and anyone who has truly made a name for themselves in their field. They all did something that raised eyebrows before it raised their profile. You might want to call it unique. But at this point in history, uniqueness alone does not make waves the way it once did. You have to add a little crazy to it.
And when I say crazy, I mean that in the best possible way. Not something disruptive or irresponsible. I mean the kind of bold, unexpected, slightly unreasonable move that makes people stop, look twice, and remember your name.
The Sign on the Bank Wall
I walked into a bank recently and something stopped me in my tracks. Right there, bold and impossible to miss from any angle of the room, was a sign that read:
Do it with passion or do not do it at all.
That line has stayed with me. And I think it will continue to stay with me for a while.
Words like that can wash right over you if you let them. Or they can land somewhere deep and actually mean something. The difference is whether you are willing to ask yourself the honest question that follows:
How passionate are you really about what you are pursuing?
Not how passionate you say you are. How passionate are you in terms of what you have actually done?
A Story Worth Knowing
There is a woman named Karly Pavlina Blackburn who wanted a job at Nike. But she did not want to be just another applicant in a pile of resumes. She asked herself how she could stand out and then she did something that nobody else was doing.
She printed her resume on an edible cake and sent it to Nike.
That single act caught the attention of major media outlets who picked up her story and shared it widely. Whether she got the specific Nike role or not is beside the point. What that one bold move did was open doors that a perfectly formatted PDF resume never would have.
I am not telling you to send anyone a cake. I am asking you something far more important: how badly do you actually want this? What have you done that reflects the depth of that desire? Do you think about this when you wake up in the morning? Do you daydream about it?
The great people who have walked this earth and left a mark on it all did something that looked a little unreasonable at the time. Something that came from a place of genuine, almost irrational obsession with what they were building or pursuing.
That is the level you need to get to.
How to Take Your Passion to the Next Level
Here are four things that will help you move from simply feeling passionate to actually living it out in a way that produces real results.
1. Make Sure You Are Doing What You Actually Love
This sounds obvious but most people skip this step entirely. Are you pursuing product management, or whatever field you are in, because you genuinely love it? Would you be doing some version of it even without a paycheck attached to it yet? Life is genuinely too short to pour your energy into something that makes you miserable. If you are grumbling through it every day, that is important information worth paying attention to.
2. Immerse Yourself in the Work of Others Who Are Doing It Well
Once you are clear on what you want to do, go deep. Find the best thinkers, practitioners, and creators in your field and become almost obsessive about consuming their work. Read everything they write. Watch everything they produce. Study how they think, how they solve problems, and how they talk about the work. Let their excellence raise the standard of what you consider possible for yourself.
3. Show Up and Do the Work Every Single Day
There is no substitute for this one. You have to put your head down and show up consistently. Do something every day that moves you forward, no matter how small. A one percent improvement compounded daily builds an edge that most people never achieve simply because they are not willing to be that consistent. The field rewards the people who keep going when it would be easier to stop.
4. Review, Reflect, and Adjust Regularly
Passion without reflection can take you in the wrong direction with enormous energy. Make time to step back and honestly evaluate your work, your direction, and your growth. Are you improving? Are you moving toward where you actually want to be? What is working and what needs to change? The people who grow the fastest are not just the ones who work the hardest. They are the ones who learn the most from the work they are doing.
Passion is not a feeling you either have or do not have. It is a choice you make and a practice you maintain. The bold, slightly crazy moves that get people noticed are almost always just passion taken seriously enough to act on without apology.
So, the question is not whether you are passionate. The question is what you are going to do about it today.
