You Only Need One Person to Say Yes. Here Is How to Attract, Nurture, and Grow the Connections That Will Change Your Career

If you caught the last post, you already know the foundation. Now let us build on it.

Here is something worth remembering about networking, or about any difficult task for that matter. The moment you make up your mind to tackle it, it stops being as hard as it seemed. Think about the last time you had a task you kept putting off, only to finally sit down and finish it in two hours. You probably walked away thinking, why did I wait so long? Networking is exactly like that.

The difficulty is mostly in the resistance. Once you start, it becomes something else entirely. It becomes connection. It becomes opportunity. It even becomes fun, if you let it.

You Do Not Have to Be Perfect at It. You Just Have to Start.

As a product manager, communication is already part of your core skill set. And the truth is that great communicators are almost always great networkers too. If networking still feels uncomfortable, it may simply be that you have not given it enough genuine attempts yet.

If face to face networking is not your thing, lean into the online platforms available to you. If you do not know what to say, write it down, practice it, refine it, and practice it again until it feels natural. Build yourself a template for reaching out to new people and then adapt it to fit each individual situation. There is no single right way to network. There is only the way that works for you, and your job is to find it.

Here is a story worth holding onto. A member of staff at Cowrywise landed her role simply by sending a cold email directly to the CEO. One bold message changed the entire trajectory of her career.

And then there is the story of a young Steve Jobs, who needed materials to complete a machine he was building but did not have the money to get them. So he did something most people would never dare: he sent emails to the CEOs of the biggest companies he knew. Most of them never replied. But one person did. And that one reply gave him everything he needed.

One person. That is all it takes.

One person to refer you, to speak your name in a room you are not in, to say yes when everyone else has said no. Do not let the pile of rejections make you forget that the right yes is still out there. The most painful moments are the near misses, the times you almost got the role and then did not. But even those are part of the path. You cannot get a yes without first asking for one.

So make the decision today. Decide to stop being too shy to ask. Too afraid to reach out. Too hesitant to speak up or take the spotlight when it is your moment. That decision alone will change more than you realize.

Now let us get into the final steps of building your network the right way.

Attract Them

Here is something that might shift the way you think about networking entirely: you do not always have to be the one doing the reaching out. When you build yourself into a person of genuine value, people will come to you.

This happens when you consistently contribute to the growth of others. As you travel your own road into product management, you will come across articles, videos, tools, and insights that others on the same path would find incredibly useful. Share them. Do it consistently and generously. When people see that you show up reliably with value, they will want to know you, connect with you, and be associated with you.

Create content that tells your story. Share your struggles and your wins. You do not need to be the most experienced person in the room to have something worth saying. What you know right now is already enough to help someone who is three steps behind you. Show up authentically, be of consistent service to your community, and watch how the right people start finding their way to you.

Nurture Them

Making a connection is only the beginning. What you do after that initial contact is what determines whether that connection grows into something meaningful or quietly fades away.

Keep a record of the people you connect with. A simple Google Sheet works perfectly for this. Note down the date you met them, what they do, their contact details, their location, and a reminder of when to follow up next. This small habit alone will set you apart from the vast majority of people who meet someone promising and then never follow up.

Beyond the logistics, pay attention to the details that come up in conversation. Where they live. What they are working on. The challenges they mentioned. Even small things like a pet or a personal goal they shared. When you bring those details back up in your next conversation, it tells the person that you were genuinely listening. That you care. And that is precisely the kind of person people want in their corner.

Make it a point to reach out to your most important connections at least once a month. Not always to ask for something. Sometimes simply to check in, share something useful, or celebrate something they have achieved.

Grow With Them

The strongest professional relationships are not transactional. They are reciprocal. The goal is not to find people who can help you and then extract value from them. The goal is to find people with whom you can genuinely grow together.

Everyone has something they need and something they can offer. Take time to find out what the people in your network actually need and look for ways to be genuinely helpful. Share opportunities. Make introductions. Offer your perspective when it is useful. Be the kind of person who gives without always keeping score.

The professionals who build the most powerful networks are not the ones who are the most impressive on paper. They are the ones who are the most generous with their time, their knowledge, and their attention. And when the moment comes that you need something in return, the investment you have made in others will come back to you in ways you could not have predicted.

Nobody builds a great network by waiting to feel ready. They build it by showing up, reaching out, adding value, and staying consistent even when it feels uncomfortable.

You only need one connection to open the right door. And that connection is out there.
